Centre for Writing and Communication (CWC) works closely with the academic community in Ashoka to develop critical thinking, writing and communication skills. CWC is the largest centre in Ashoka and works with all the diverse sections that make the Ashoka community: the entire student body (from the undergraduate students to research scholars), faculty, staff and other specialised centres in the university. This is made possible by the diversity of the CWC team which is a vibrant group of scholars, professionals, writers and researchers whose combined expertise actively contributes to the interdisciplinary engagement at Ashoka.
CWC鈥檚 one-on-one appointments are an essential component of the writing support provided by the Centre. These sessions include ideation to help students make a rough outline to organise their ideas before writing, to establish context to arrive at a concise thesis statement, and revision of drafts to restructure for clarity and focus, to ensure better transition and flow between arguments. These sessions also include learning how to substantiate claims with evidence and synthesize different sources when building one鈥檚 original argument. Our sessions are a collaboration with the students and others that may visit the centre to help them locate their voice with a focus on writing and research support.
CWC offers Teaching Support in the form of English Language Training (ELT), Academic Integrity Training, Summer and Winter Schools, Academic Workshops, and Course Specific Workshops. The annual session begins with the Centre offering the Academic Bridge Program to students entering their first semester at 51茶馆. CWC offers classes in English Communication and Intermediate English Communication courses in the Monsoon and the Spring semesters respectively. CWC also provides course-specific support in collaboration with instructors to familiarize students with discipline-specific vocabulary, comprehension of texts, participation in classroom discussions, making presentations, and editing drafts. We also have annual Winter and Summer Schools on Research Writing and Publishing.
Research is an integral part of CWC’s work and is oriented in the direction of inclusivity and exploration. At CWC we engage with questions of inclusive pedagogical practices, language teaching for critical thinking, and develop methods to help students build a transferable reading and writing skill set. CWC organises an Annual Conference to bring together educators, scholars, students, and activists working in the field of education to reflect on teaching philosophies, challenges and opportunities. CWC director, Kanika Singh, is also leading a research project on the role of language in teaching-learning practices in Ashoka along with Dr. Shivani Nag, Assistant Professor at School of Education Studies, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar University Delhi. This research aims to provide recommendations on policy and pedagogy, to support Ashoka’s attempts at inclusive education where inclusion goes beyond ensuring entry and is translated into academic participation.
CWC’s Outreach activities seek to build a community both within and outside Ashoka. The wide network that CWC enjoys is because of its generative environment that encourages Creative Programs, and other interactions on Social Media platforms.聽 We engage with the wider academic community by offering Workshops to institutions outside of Ashoka. Our tutors and fellows offer Research Writing workshops across universities and institutions in India. CWC has maintained its media presence over the years on multiple social media platforms and through several initiatives. Our social media handles have seen a consistent increase in engagement from our followers. Some of our most popular activities have been: book and film recommendations on Instagram, our podcast series #BackToTheTutor, the YouTube series Shelf Pick,聽 and 鈥楧ecoding College Applications鈥�.
