One-on-One Sessions
As a writing centre, CWC鈥檚 core offering is a 45 minute long, one-on-one consultation, open to all students and staff. CWC recognizes individualised feedback to students as a crucial component through all stages of their academic writing鈥攆rom brainstorming ideas, to logically developing arguments and finally revising their work. These sessions are open to students across disciplines and levels of study and their primary goal is to help students develop a transferable reading and writing toolkit that can support them throughout their academic journey as students as well as teachers and professionals. Besides assignments and publications, these consultations also extend to genres like Statement of Purpose, Personal Statement, Cover Letter, and Resume.
In some cases, CWC tutors also provide guidance to students through regular mentoring sessions spanning a semester or the academic year. Following an initial goal-setting meeting, students collaborate with team members on a personalised teaching-writing plan, which focuses on individual needs. Across multiple sessions, they methodically address elements of academic writing as well critical reading while keeping their coursework and writing exercises in mind.
What to expect in a one-on-one session:
When you book an appointment with a CWC tutor, you can expect support across different areas of writing and learning and not just citations and academic writing styles. Some of these areas are as follows:
Pre-writing: Ideation and brainstorming sessions help students understand their prompts thoroughly, outline their ideas, and structure their writing. We also encourage students to visit us if they need help in understanding some of the readings or concepts from their class.
Thesis statement: Our sessions often focus on establishing background and context for a clear, concise thesis statement. Students learn to succinctly convey the purpose of their writing by identifying the main topic and establishing their paper’s position with respect to the assignment.
Claims & Evidence: Tutors also help students improve their arguments by encouraging emphasis on supporting claims with evidence and specificity in writing.
Conclusion: Students learn why a conclusion is important to their paper and how to craft concise, persuasive summaries with examples.
Transition and flow: Students learn to structure arguments for seamless transitions, avoiding abrupt shifts in style and tone. They’re introduced to signal and transition phrases to write more cohesively.
Grammar and punctuation: Tutors also provide feedback on students鈥� writing samples to help them improve their syntax, grammar, and vocabulary through consistent tense usage, punctuation, determiners, and connectors.
Using sources: Our tutors help students understand what kind of sources they can and should use for their assignments as well as techniques and exercises for summarising, paraphrasing, and combining these different sources.
Citation: We also provide information about academic originality and citation styles like MLA, APA, and Chicago, with examples via Purdue OWL.
