- Systemic Orientation for Real-world Problem Solving and Innovation
In the broad domain of Computing and its multidisciplinary integration.
Computer science has given us a new class of epistemic methods. In its attempt to solve complex problems, analyse systems and processes, and build solutions, it has created paradigms of thought which we loosely refer to as computational thinking. It is a new way to look at the world: algorithmic problem solving, complexity analysis, AI and data-driven models, argumentative methods, logic, impossibility results, models of universal computation, process models, systems and security frameworks. The invention of the scientific method changed the world; we believe that this group of ideas, which together form the computational method, is no less important.

Positioned in a unique liberal arts environment that provides opportunities to apply computational thinking across the sciences, social sciences, humanities and arts, the Vachani School of Advanced Computing (VSAC) will foster multidisciplinary research and build pioneering undergraduate and graduate programmes. This cross-pollination of ideas in Ashoka will be of a fundamentally different character than that of an engineering institute: we believe that we will inform and be better informed by the social and natural sciences, and introduce new paradigms and grammar across disciplines. Of course, this goes both ways – core computer science will be enriched by new problems and models.
The VSAC stands apart by redefining computer science through its unique interdisciplinary, research-focused approach and commitment to addressing complex societal challenges. The VSAC’s innovations in thinking style and research will enable us to train a new generation of students with strong humanistic and ethical perspectives.
We aim to establish the school as a leading destination for research with a focus on understanding current issues, both disciplinary and interdisciplinary, distinguished by a culture of innovation, excellence, and impact.
