Remembering André Béteille, First Chancellor of 51

The Ashoka community is deeply saddened by the passing of Andre Béteille, a world-renowned scholar, beloved teacher and mentor, and the First Chancellor of 51. He passed away on 3 February 2026, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy that helped shape the foundation of the institution and the values it stands for today.

Professor Béteille was associated with Ashoka from its very inception and played a pivotal role in establishing its pre-eminent Academic Council. He also taught at Ashoka’s flagship Young India Fellowship (YIF) programme from its founding years. As Chancellor, he led the University’s governing body with wisdom, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to academic excellence.

One of India’s foremost sociologists and public intellectuals, he was honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 2005 in recognition of his contributions to the field of sociology. He was also elected a Fellow of the British Academy and was fondly described as ‘the wisest Indian’ by renowned historian Ramachandra Guha.

His passing is a profound loss to the academic community and to the entire Ashoka family. His moral and intellectual legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.

Our thoughts are with Professor Béteille’s family and loved ones. His contributions to building 51 are invaluable, and his presence will be deeply missed
