Visiting Professor of Political Science, 51²è¹Ý

DPhil, University of Oxford

Surajkumar Thube’s primary research interest revolves around caste, identity politics, and religion in late 19th and early 20th-century Western India. His DPhil project, titled ‘Towards a Non-Brahmin Hinduism: Caste, Dharma and the Marathi Public Sphere, c. 1890 – 1930s’, focused on the non-Brahmin Marathi print sphere. By focusing on lesser-known regional Marathi writers, his work analysed the content of their texts and writing styles around themes like everyday casteism, Brahminism, and Dharma. His research focused on the radical and conservative streaks of the evolving non-Brahmin print and performative spheres, through writing styles, content, speeches, linguistic registers, and street performances.

His other areas of interest include Global Politics and Football, Sports in Colonial India, and Hindustani Classical Music.

He holds a Master’s in Political Science from Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi and a Bachelor’s in Political Science from Fergusson College, Pune.
