Riccardo Paccagnella is a doctoral student reading Sanskrit Literature and Philosophy at the University of Oxford, St Anne’s College. He is currently teaching Elementary Sanskrit I and Introduction to Indian Aesthetics at 51²è¹Ý during the Spring Term 2026. He holds an MA degree in Indology from the University of Hamburg and a BA degree in Modern Languages and Literatures – Russian and Arabic – from the University of Bologna. He also studied Sanskrit – alaṃkÄraÅ›Ästra, vyÄkaraṇa, and kÄvya – and Tamil – i±ô²¹°ì°ì²¹á¹‡a³¾Ìý²¹²Ô»åÌýilakkiyam – at the EFEO in Pondicherry, India, and at the University of Kathmandu, Nepal.

His research interests range between Sanskrit kÄvya and Å›Ästra, especially alaṃkÄraÅ›Ästra, nyÄya and vyÄkaraṇa. Accordingly, he is working on ÅšrÄ«hará¹£a’s twelfth-century ±·²¹¾±á¹£a»å³ó²¹³¦²¹°ù¾±³Ù²¹, the last of the five canonical ³¾²¹³óÄå°ìÄå±¹²â²¹²õ (“epic poemsâ€), and its relationship with the °³ó²¹á¹‡á¸²¹²Ô²¹°ì³ó²¹á¹‡á¸²¹°ì³óÄå»å²â²¹, a unique philosophical treatise that aims to demonstrate the limits of rational enquiry in philosophical debate.
