Visiting Faculty, Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, IISER Berhampur
Former Scientist-F (Retd), Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune

Dr. Parthasarathi Mukhopadhyay, FASc, is a distinguished atmospheric scientist and meteorologist. He currently serves as Visiting Faculty at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, IISER, Berhampur. Dr. Mukhopadhyay has formerly held the position of Scientist F (Retd) at IITM, Pune, where he contributed extensively to the Monsoon Mission Project. With 33 years of experience, his expertise lies in numerical modeling, model development, parameterization of physical processes, extreme weather events, and monsoon forecasting.

He played a pivotal role in developing a high-resolution (12 km) Global Ensemble Weather Forecast Model under the NITI Ayog Departmental Action Plan of the Ministry of Earth Sciences. He also led the development of a global model with 6.5 km resolution over the tropics at IITM.

Dr. Mukhopadhyay earned his B.Sc. (Physics) (1985), M.Sc. (Physics) (1988), and M.Tech. (Atmospheric Science) (1991) from Calcutta University, securing first-class honors in all. Later, he completed his Ph.D. (Physics) at Pune University in 2005.

As an academician, he has been actively involved in teaching since 2007. He served as an Adjunct Faculty for M.Tech students in Atmospheric and Space Science at Pune University and as a Guest Professor of Earth Sciences at IIT Gandhinagar (2022–2023). Since August 2024, he has been a Visiting Faculty at IISER, Berhampur.

Dr. Mukhopadhyay is an elected Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore (2023) and has contributed significantly to various international organizations, including WMO’s World Weather Research Programme (WWRP). He is also a member of the WWRP Steering Group on Sub-seasonal Applications for Agriculture and Environment (SAGE) and the Tropical Meteorology Research (TMR) Working Group.

With over 100 peer-reviewed publications (H-index: 28), he has made contributions to thunderstorm prediction, heavy rainfall forecasting, wind and solar energy prediction, ensemble systems, and dynamical core development. His work on extreme rainfall events and convection permitting models has garnered international acclaim.

Dr. Mukhopadhyay has co-edited and authored multiple books, including:

  • “South Asian Summer Monsoon: Processes, Prediction, and Societal Impacts†(Elsevier, 2025)
  • “Multi-Scale Precipitation Variability Over the Tropics: New Insights from Observations and Modelling†(Elsevier, 2025)

He has also received numerous honors, such as:

  • IITM Silver Jubilee Awards (2002, 2010)
  • Ministry of Earth Science Certificate of Merit (2015)
  • IITM Golden Jubilee Award (2020)

Dr. Mukhopadhyay continues to guide students, with 10 Ph.D. theses awarded under his supervision, and 3 ongoing. He has also organized seven international workshops on weather and climate modeling, including the AI/ML & Physical Models Workshop (2025).
