Ph.D. in Environmental Studies, 51²è¹Ý
Niranjan is interested in studying applied landscape ecology and animal behavior. He has a bachelors in Microbiology and a Masters in Environmental Studies and Resource Management. Prior to join LEACHS lab, he was a Project Officer at WWF-India, and worked on human-elephant conflict and monitored radio-collared elephants in the Western Ghats-Nilgiris landscape. For his Ph.D., he will be looking at dynamics of mid-high altitude forest and grassland ecosystems in the Himalayas with respect to inter species dynamics and habitat suitability for wildlife.
Niranjan is interested in studying landscape ecology and understanding the consequences climate change has on vulnerable ecosystems such as the Himalayas. He studies flora and fauna of the mid elevation plantations, forests and grasslands in Himachal Pradesh and Eastern Nepal, using tools such as remote sensing, vegetation plots and camera trapping to understand the legacy effects of plantations on both local plant and animal diversity. He is interested in Pine – Oak dynamics and the role of fire and human use in driving biodiversity richness and abundance in the Himalayas. He’s also interested in studying functional traits of trees and mammal mediated seed dispersal in high altitude forest systems.
