My Tryst with Entrepreneurship at Ashoka: An Adventurous Education

A personal account of exploring entrepreneurship at Ashoka by Bhumika Mittal, ASP’25

Embarking on my journey with entrepreneurship has been an enriching experience, one that has transformed not only my perspective on business but also my approach to learning and personal growth. My tryst with entrepreneurship began even before I set foot on the Ashoka campus, during a summer course on Creativity and Design Thinking at AshokaX. This early exposure planted the seeds of curiosity and ambition, guiding me toward an immersive exploration of entrepreneurship that has since defined my academic and personal endeavors.

The Genesis: A Prelude to College

The summer before starting college at Ashoka, I enrolled in the Creativity and Design Thinking Course at AshokaX. This program provided a solid foundation in creative problem-solving, encouraging me to look at challenges through a different lens. I learned that entrepreneurship is not solely about launching a startup; it is about fostering an entrepreneurial mindset—a skill set that is universally valuable across all fields. This revelation set the tone for my subsequent journey, where every challenge was seen as an opportunity for innovation and growth.

Diving Deeper: Courses That Shaped My Vision

Once I joined Ashoka, I quickly immersed myself in courses designed to broaden my understanding of entrepreneurship. In my second semester, I took “How to Start A Startup†and “Theory and Practice of Leadership.†Initially, I was uncertain about whether I wanted to venture out on my own or simply enhance my skill set. However, these courses made it abundantly clear that entrepreneurship is not confined to starting a business on your own—it is about developing a proactive, problem-solving mindset that prepares you for the unpredictable outside world.

These academic experiences taught me that leadership and entrepreneurial thinking are intertwined. The lessons from these courses went beyond textbooks, emphasising practical applications, real-life challenges, and interactive learning. The theories I absorbed were quickly put to the test through group projects and case studies, enabling me to experiment with innovative solutions in a supportive environment.

A Summer of Transformation: The Hatchery Entrepreneurship Programme

My growing confidence in entrepreneurial skills led me to participate in the Hatchery Entrepreneurship Programme at Lehigh University during the summer of 2022. This six-week boot camp was an intensive, immersive experience designed to equip students with a solution-oriented mindset through creative design thinking. Here, the classroom transformed into a dynamic laboratory of ideas where I could apply everything I had learned.

The experience was nothing short of transformative. The rigorous environment pushed me to the limits, and the hands-on nature of the program allowed me to experiment with innovative concepts in real-time. Working on the project with The Global Good Funds Venture and presenting at a pitching competition—a victory that was not only a personal triumph but also a testament to the practical value of the entrepreneurial skills I had honed through my courses. This accomplishment reinforced my belief that an entrepreneurial mindset is about resilience, adaptability, and the relentless pursuit of creative solutions.

Beyond the Classroom: Building a Community of Innovators

At Ashoka, the journey did not limit itself to classroom learning. My involvement in various extracurricular activities further solidified my entrepreneurial spirit. As a founding member of the Entrepreneurship Club, I had the opportunity of working alongside like-minded peers who shared a passion for innovation. Together, we organised events like Startup Ashoka, which became a vibrant platform for exchanging ideas, networking, and learning from industry experts.

In addition to club activities, I served as a teaching assistant for several courses, an experience that allowed me to give back to the community and deepen my own understanding of entrepreneurial concepts. Organising networking dinners and hosting guest speakers further enriched my perspective, as I had the opportunity to learn from seasoned leaders. These events were not merely about sharing success stories—they were about understanding the challenges, failures, and lessons that pave the way to success.

A Multidimensional Approach to Learning

One of the most remarkable aspects of my journey at Ashoka has been the diversity of learning experiences. Courses such as “Technology Law and Policy: A New Frontier for Business and Society,†“Technology Product Management,†and even unconventional ones like “Strategy through Board Games†have expanded my horizons. They have taught me that entrepreneurship is not limited to business mechanics but also involves understanding the intricate relationship between technology, society, and innovation.

These courses highlighted the evolving nature of computer science and technology, offering insights that go far beyond the traditional curriculum. They provided me with a holistic view of how technology can be harnessed to solve complex societal challenges—a perspective that is increasingly relevant in today’s fast-paced world.

Reflecting on the Journey

Looking back, my tryst with entrepreneurship at Ashoka has been a tapestry woven with academic rigour, practical experiences, and vibrant community engagement. Each step of the journey has contributed to building an entrepreneurial mindset that I will carry with me throughout my career and life. The skills and lessons learned—from creative design thinking and leadership to technology management and networking—are invaluable assets that prepare me for the uncertainties and opportunities of the future.

At Ashoka, I discovered that entrepreneurship is not just about starting a venture; it is about nurturing a way of thinking that is resilient, innovative, and ever-evolving. It is a mindset that encourages continuous learning, embraces challenges, and seeks creative solutions in every aspect of life.

In conclusion, my journey at Ashoka has been a transformative adventure that transcends the boundaries of traditional education. It is a story of growth, discovery, and the relentless pursuit of innovation.
