Title: "The Role of Science in Conserving Wildlife in India"
Speaker: Dr. Yadvendradev V. Jhala, INSA Senior Scientist at National Centre for Biological Sciences
Abstract: The talk examines the critical, yet often inconsistent, role of science in shaping India's wildlife conservation policy and management. Drawing on case studies of iconic species—including the tiger, Asiatic lion, snow leopard, wolf, and great Indian bustard—it highlights their specific ecological requirements and assesses the current alignment of government policies with these scientific needs. The presentation concludes by identifying key gaps and proposing necessary actions to better integrate scientific evidence into effective conservation strategies.
Speaker's Bio: Dr. Yadvendradev V. Jhala is a renowned wildlife scientist with a Ph.D. from Virginia Tech and post-doctoral experience at the Smithsonian Institution. He served as Senior Professor and Dean at the Wildlife Institute of India until 2023 and is now an INSA Senior Scientist at the National Centre for Biological Sciences. A fellow of INSA and NASI, his pioneering research on tigers, lions, wolves, and bustards has directly influenced national policy, including vulture conservation and the reintroduction of cheetahs to India. His work exemplifies the application of science to effective wildlife conservation and management.
We look forward to your active participation.
Warm regards,
Environmental Studies Department
