Physics Colloquium: Learning About Particle-laden Flows

  • This event has passed.

Abstract: We are familiar with small suspended aerosol particles in the air which reduce visibility and create health issues. We will talk about how to solve for such suspensions with and without background wind or turbulence. We will discuss why this problem is hard, and what approximations we can make to get some basic understanding. Particle clustering and sedimentation will be important in our discussion.

About the Speaker: Rama Govindarajan is Senior Professor at the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bengaluru, India. Her PhD was at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, and postdoc was in CalTech. Before joining TIFR she worked in the National Aerospace Laboratories and in the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research. She is a fluid dynamicist working primarily on particulate and droplet flows, flows with phase change and on instabilities.
She is a Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, the Indian Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, India and the American Physical Society. She was on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Fluid Mechanics, and is now an Associate Editor at Physical Review Fluids.
