Title:
An Ornament to the Field of True Vows: KāñcÄ«puram in the VaradābhyudayacampÅ« of Veá¹…kaṭādhvarin

Abstract:
The present study introduces and analyses the Varadābhyudaya, a little-known campū-kāvya poem of the renowned Sanskrit poet, Veṅkaṭādhvarin (circa 16-17th century CE).

Consisting of verse interspersed with sections of prose, the poem retells the sthalamāhātmya  of the Varadarājasvāmi Temple, a prominent temple to Viṣṇu and a major site of ÅšrÄ«vaiṣṇava pilgrimage located in KāñcÄ«puram, Tamilnadu.

By attempting to analyse the influence of the depiction of  KāñcÄ«puram in earlier sthalamāhātmya texts and poetry on the poem and through a careful analysis of the poem itself, the study aims to analyse the depiction of KāñcÄ«puram and its temples in Veá¹…kaṭādhvarin's  work, while exploring their role in the text's narrative and their significance to Veá¹…kaṭādhvarin himself.
