Title:
An Ornament to the Field of True Vows: KÄñcÄ«puram in the VaradÄbhyudayacampÅ« of Veá¹…kaá¹Ädhvarin
Abstract:
The present study introduces and analyses the VaradÄbhyudaya, a little-known campÅ«-kÄvya poem of the renowned Sanskrit poet, Veá¹…kaá¹Ädhvarin (circa 16-17th century CE).
Consisting of verse interspersed with sections of prose, the poem retells the sthalamÄhÄtmya of the VaradarÄjasvÄmi Temple, a prominent temple to Viṣṇu and a major site of ÅšrÄ«vaiṣṇava pilgrimage located in KÄñcÄ«puram, Tamilnadu.
By attempting to analyse the influence of the depiction of KÄñcÄ«puram in earlier sthalamÄhÄtmya texts and poetry on the poem and through a careful analysis of the poem itself, the study aims to analyse the depiction of KÄñcÄ«puram and its temples in Veá¹…kaá¹Ädhvarin's work, while exploring their role in the text's narrative and their significance to Veá¹…kaá¹Ädhvarin himself.
