Horror Cinema as Social Commentary

CWC Creative Programme

  • This event has passed.

In horror, what we fear, flinch at, or are repulsed by can reveal more about the ethos we occupy than the ghastly images themselves. The session explores the social and political significance of the horror genre through films and shows within and beyond the Indian landscape. It equips participants with a vocabulary to talk about films and helps them analyze the formal techniques used in horror cinema, promoting critical thinking and academic approaches to a mainstream subject.

We will engage with themes ranging from sophisticated atmospheric thrillers to so-called “low-brow” pulpy entertainment, demonstrating how to trace patterns in horror films and situate them within a sociopolitical context. Together, we will examine some legendary scares and probe how fear is socially constructed through a filmic language that feeds on contemporary anxieties.
