Philosophy and Computer Science

Philosophy and Computer Science (PHICS) is an interdisciplinary major combining Philosophy and Computer Science. It is a 4 year degree. The full major requirements for PHICS are available from the OAA. An general overview of the major requirements (80 credits) is below:

    5 basic science courses:

    • Probability and Statistics
    • Linear Algebra
    • Calculus (Calculus Enabler)
    • Physics Primer
    • Introduction to Biology I: Genetics & Evolution

    6 Computer Science courses:

    • Introduction to Computer Science
    • Discrete Mathematics
    • Data Structures and Algorithms
    • Introduction to Machine Learning
    • Theory of Computation
    • Computer and Organisation Systems

    6 Philosophy courses:

    • PHI-1000 Introduction to Philosophy
    • PHI-1060 Symbolic Logic
    • One Ethics course (any PHI course from the range PHI-X600 to PHI-X829)
    • One Philosophy of Science course (any PHI course from the range PHI-X240 to PHI-X299) OR One Philosophy of Language course (any PHI course from the range PHI-X300 to PHI-X359)
    • Any two PHI courses

    A capstone project of 4 credits

    8 elective credits of courses from CS and/or PHI.
